Snow in Utah FINALLY!

It has finally snowed in Utah. Yes. Finally. My boys were quick to build jumps/ramps on which to sled at the local park. Ha! These kids crack me up. Sorry the pictures are blurry and hard to see. Trust me, there were many squeals of happiness and delight -- the best sounds to this mom's ears!

The Pied Piper

Last week, Jacob said his favorite part of music day at school was the talent show. Really? Okay. I then asked him why he liked the talent show. He said he was going to borrow "daddy's flute" and play a beautiful song. Me, trying to not choke on my cereal, said that dad does play nor own a flute. Jacob was quick to reply that yes, dad does have a flute. Jacob had been referring to the plastic brown recorder Marty had leftover from his childhood. Ha ha ha! My very own Pied Piper! Birthday Party Fun

Jacob was invited to a surprise birthday party for one of his classmates Alec. It was held at a gym in Syracuse. The boys all got to jump in the trampolines, run down the mats and jump into the foam pit at the end of the runway. The hit of the party was the harness/bungee cord bouncy thing. I will try to upload the videos from my phone. Wish me luck! I give up. I can't figure out why my pictures won't rotate correctly. I have literally spent 20 minutes trying to edit them. My brain is now mush. Here's the best I can do. I'll have to try the videos later. Gees!!!

A House Divided

As most of you know, the Asay house is a house divided. I am a BYU graduate and Marty is a Utah graduate. His heart lives for the Utes. He comes by this weakness honestly; his dad (the most wonderful father-in-law a girl could ask for) is a Crimson Club member. In fact, the entire Asay family is Utah through and through. Jacob takes after his dad. He loves the Utes. He has been fortunate enough to attend the football and basketball games with his grandpa Asay. What a thrill for him. Thank you Dave for creating such fond memories for my sweet boy Jacob. In salute to Jacob's Utah passion, I turned his room into the Utah fan's dream. Here is proof:

Because I have lived a righteous and worthy life, I have also been blessed with my little Benjamin. He is a "Go Cougars" fan. It's hard to hold fast to the iron rod. But my little four-year-old has decided to CTR (choose the right). He says that people who do not make good choices "choose the left." For example, Utah fans "choose the left" according to Ben. I rewarded Ben with his righteous decision to be a BYU fan and turned his room into the Cougar Den:

The Fat Head logos will be ordered as soon as I can afford them. But I have compensated by adding the cute Rocket Ship ceiling fan.

Merry Christmas

It's hard to believe that Christmas has already come and gone. All way too fast I might add. I love my family. I could just squeeze my kids. I love them that much. They are so much fun. What a delightful way to wake up Christmas morning. I just had a thought. The word "mas" means "more" in Spanish. What a neat way to define Christmas: "more Christ."

I love Jacob's expressiveness. I love his eagerness. Ben was just as eager; it just didn't cross over into the pictures. No pics of Marty. He was the cameraman. Notice how he even got shots of Sarah in the background?

Christmas Angels

I know two of the cutest Christmas Angels! We took the kids to the Ogden Christmas Village for family night. This was the third year we weathered the cold temps to let the kids run around, enjoying the sights. After chasing Ben around, we got the kiddos back into the warm car and went to Sandy's for some hot chocolate and hot fudge cake. What can I say? I am a sucker for my kids and proud of it!

We're Not In Kansas Anymore...

I thought I left the hurricane force winds behind when I moved from North Carolina. But no. I guess they followed me here. We had quite a few shingles get blown off the east side of our house. We also lost some soffits, fascia, and a tree. Our neighbor's trampoline blew through the fence. It was quite sad. It's crazy that the equivalent to category 2 hurricane force winds could exist here. It was like living through hurricane Hugo again. CRAZY!

Ben's Dental Work

For those of you who have not heard, Ben's teeth suck. They are horrible rotten teeth. We brush his teeth very well. However, he has genetically inferior teeth. That being said, we had to get not one, but TWO of his back molars capped. Yes, my baby has 2 silver teeth. Baby teeth. That will fall out by the time he is 12-13 years old.

He did get valium from the dentist prior to the work. This video shows Ben five minutes after getting oral sedation!

Annual Gingerbread FHE

Last night was our 4th annual gingerbread house decorating FHE. I made dinner for everyone. It was peasant fare: scalloped potatoes with ham, brussels sprouts, and spinach salad. I had to make something with leftover ham. It was yummy.

We get our houses from Costco. And they FINALLY got smart and pre-assembled the houses. That way, we get to do the fun decorating part without the hassle of trying to get the house to stay upright.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. For those of you wondering about Grandma's fashion-forward brace: she had back surgery/rods placed a few months ago, and this is the brace to keep back supported during the healing process.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

We decorated for Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend. We have always had an artificial tree. Waste not, want not. However, I really wanted a real live tree this year. I love the smell of a Christmas tree. But I didn't want a fat and full tree. I wanted a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. We went to the tree lot. All I saw were big, fat, full trees. However, I walked towards the end of the lot. A glorious light shone down on the most humble little tree. I fell in love. I introduce the Asay Christmas Tree:

Ben's Birthday

Ben's 4th Birthday

My baby is now four. I am so sad. I love this kid, his lisp, his smile, his eyes, and everything about him. I love him! We got a picture of Uncle Don wearing the Birthday boy hat!

All Ben wanted for his birthday was flowers on his cake. Really? So I made his cake from a box. Marty called Harmons and had them make the flowers for the top. He was beyond thrilled. Thank you Harmon's in Farmington!

Trick or Treat Time

There's not much to say about this post. Jacob was a U of U fan; Ben was the Go Cougars fan. I find it hard to spend money on costumes that my kids will only wear once. This way, they can wear their costumes all winter long!

They are still working on eating their candy. I swear that Halloween is a conspiracy formed by dentists. Gees!

It's Autumn Time

Ben is a pack rat. Not really, but he sure does like to take everything in a room (shoes, toys, books, laundry baskets, odds and ends, etc) and put it in one HUGE pile. Why? So that his trucks have some "dirt" to traverse. The wonderful imaginings of a little boy. Here's proof:

I asked the boys to please do their creative playtime outside. They were outside 2 seconds, came running in, and asked if they could use the rakes. Sure, knock yourselves out. Here's what I found when I went outside. Sheer childhood delight!

I then had to get the obligatory poses with our pumpkins. The second counselor in the bishopric, Brother Green, gave Ben the huge pumpkin. According to Ben, it will "make lots of pies!"

Antelope Island Fun

Marty took the boys to Antelope Island Parks over UEA weekend. I got to work and sleep. I am sad I missed out on their adventures. See, they are super excited to see the buffalo for the first time ever. I miss so much with this thing called work. Maybe one day I would have to do it any more! I love my family and I love that Marty takes care of my boys and provides these neat experiences for them. I am blessed!

Adams Canyon Hike

Jacob, Ben, and I went on a hike Saturday. The boys were super excited to get their exercise in, go see the water, and have fun with Mommy. Marty stayed home. Oh well. He did dust and vacuum the house. I was pleasantly surprised that there were no complaints from the boys about the first half of the hike --- the hike UP. I thought for sure Jacob would have some weeping and wailing. They were both good sports. They each had their own backpacks and water bottles. They loved the little stream of water. And they especially loved the run all the way down the mountain! I can still hear squeals of delight. I love them!

Ben's First Day of Preschool (aka Freedom Day for Mommy and Daddy)

Wow! It finally happened. Ben started Preschool today. My baby is a big boy now. He was beyond thrilled to go today. Marty and I walked him up the street to embark on a new adventure: formal learning! Here are the pictures honoring his big day. Notice that he rode his scooter to school. He even willingly wore his helmet; that's how excited he was!

I love watching my kids grow. I love to watch them get excited for new experiences and to learn. I remember thinking when Jacob was a baby: "Just stay little. Stay a baby for a little while longer." I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy every age and stage my boys have lived. Even though Ben is my baby, I love watching him grow. I love his little lisp. I love his expressiveness. I love his energy. I love what a "boy" he is. He loves all things cars, sports, road construction, motorcycles. He loves life! What a wonderful gift to have.

The Second Grade

Today was Jacob's first day of the Second Grade. He was nervous yesterday. He said he was worried that no one would want to play with him, and that he would be bullied. My first thought was to just let it blow over: "Really? It's just the 2nd Grade" I thought. However, he seemed quite sincere in his worries. He asked Marty for a father's blessing. He also said a prayer last night, and prayed that he would have a fun year. When he woke this morning, he was all smiles and ready for a new school year. He said he felt good about his blessing and prayers. Wow! The faith of a seven year old.

He was so excited this morning that he requested to ride his bike to school. I taught him how to use his bike lock last night. He was super excited about the lock and the key. I put on my running duds, grabbed my iPod, and left with Jacob on his bike and Ben on his scooter. And up the hill we went. And yes, it was uphill, and I am NOT exaggerating. Marty even came with us, but he walked. He said something about not wanting to sweat. Ha!

Jacob is in Miss Dixon's class. Miss Dixon is also in our ward. I taught her oldest daughter in YW. I am just tickled that Jacob is so happy for a new school year.

Even though Ben flew off a trampoline four weeks ago and ended up with a concussion, Marty and I decided to buy the boys a tramp. We got a heavy duty one with a safety net. After a few frustrating hours of assembly, we have been all smiles! Notice the last picture. That picture alone makes it all worth it!

Discovery Gateway

I took my offspring to the Children's Museum, aka Discovery Gateway, a few weeks ago. We had never been before, and the boys loved it. I lost Ben twice. That turkey kept sneaking away to play in the "Road Construction" zone. That kid drives me crazy the way he will just meander off on his own. Oh well. I found him both times, and made a quick getaway after I found him the second time!

Happy Birthday Jacob

Jacob is now seven. Wow. Time flies when you're having fun. And yes. I have had a blast these past seven years. It took a little work to get this gentle-heart here, but he is worth everything Marty and I have gone through.

Not a day goes by that my heart doesn't melt when I see my Jacob. He is such a joy in my life. He loves his little Ben. He watches over Ben and protects him. He is such a delight. I love to hug him and smell his head. Call me crazy; I love to sniff Jacob. I love to cuddle with him at night. I love Jacob. I must have done something right to deserve such a sweet, wonderful, smart, strong, delightful, happy, valiant son!

There are a few pictures of Ben opening gifts. He was very willing to help Jacob tear into the loot. Also, disregard the Christmas wrapping paper; I find it difficult to buy birthday wrapping paper when I have a closet full of Christmas wrap.

We celebrated Father's Day this past Sunday. Marty scored with a new weed-eater and the cd "Kidz Bop 19." He has been wanting that cd for several months now. Funny, I know.

Jacob and Ben made a Father's Day message out of drinking straws in the basement family room. Thanks to their cousin Jordan for helping them out.

I am so proud of my hubby Marty. He saw a "Kid's Car Wash" on one of his friend's blogs, and decided that we would make one for our kids. I was a tad skeptical at first since neither one of us is very handy. I am quite impressed with the finished product. It only took about one hour to complete. And guess what! No wire coat hangers were necessary. (That's a family inside joke). As you will see in the following pictures, it's a hit. The kids get to ride their bikes and scooters through the car wash. I wish I had one of these when I was a little kid. How fun!

Water Party a la Julie McCoy

I may have mentioned this before. Jacob is our resident cruise director "Julie McCoy." If you don't know who Julie McCoy is, just google "The Love Boat."

We haven't had much super warm weather since Monday when the temp soared to 85 degrees. Since then, temps have been mid 60s, low 70s. But still rather sunny and spectacular. Since it was still sunny, Jacob decided to throw together an impromptu water party/shaving cream fight. He invited all his friends. Only a few took him up on his offer seeing as it was cool with brisk breezes.

Here are some highlights from today's festivities. Please ignore me in the background. Yes, I have Relief Society arms and a saggy backside, but who in this world is perfect. Not me. And I am happy!

Sleeping Angel

We went to the public library yesterday. It's one of Ben's most favorite activities to do. He loves getting books about big machines, trucks, fire engines, snow blowers, etc.

He got three books yesterday. One about fire engines, one about helicopters, and one about garbge trucks. He laid on the couch last night and started "reading" his garbage trucks book. As I was watching TV with Marty, I didn't hear Ben "reading" anymore. This is what I saw:

He is my sweet angel straight from heaven. It's the simple and pure moments like this that I treasure as a mom. I love it!

Summer Fun (And Not So Much Fun)

We started the Summer off with a bang. We got Cherry Hill Season Passes this year. We get them every year, and we always LOVE it. We strayed from our routine a few years ago and got Lagoon passes. MISTAKE. The water at Lagoon is super frigid. The rules are ridiculous, and the crowds are nuts. I will admit that the rides were a hit with the kids. But I will never forget the chattering teeth and blue lips of Jacob and Ben when playing at Lagoona Beach. Super Duper Cold.

Cherry Hill is far superior at this stage of life for the boys. It has heated water. It boasts the Lazy River, the large swimming pool, Pirates Cove, the Water Slides, and Cardiac Canyon. Throw in the free parking, and not-so-white-trash atmosphere, and you have the perfect place to take a three-yr old and six-yr old. Perfect.

The "not-so-much-fun" part of our Summer Vacay thus far is the six-month dental check ups the boys had just today. I went in thinking we were doing well getting these yuck-mouths pretty clean. I guess Marty and I are far from perfect dental parents. Jacob has a "new" cavity diagnosed today under his only existing filling. Gees kid, you're killing me.

Ben has THREE cavities. The dentist calls them "flossing cavities." Oops! Mom and Dad Asay are such slackers. Dr. Brown said Ben wouldn't have these small cavities if we had been diligent in flossing Ben's teeth. You're killing me Smalls! And before anyone asks, yes, all the cavities are in baby teeth. However, if left unfilled, they will continue to fester and cause even more problems down the road, not to mention potential pain for my kiddies. When I was asked if I wanted them to have white or silver fillings, I quickly replied "silver. Let's go cheap for teeth that will fall out anyway." I really wanted my boys to get 18K fillings. Nuttin' like gold toofs for some young bling! I also said Ben doesn't need sedation; he will do just fine with the happy gas. Again, I want to go cheap for baby teeth. If I have to lay on top of him to hold him still, I will.

I also informed my little darlings that the Tooth Fairy does NOT leave any money for dirty teeth, or teeth with fillings. Again, cheap. I know. But it's this dang Obama economy. I've got to scrimp somewhere.

By the way, both boys chose cookie dough flavored toothpaste. Yuck. That's the red stuff the DA is putting on Ben's teeth. GROSS! Oh well, whatever makes them happy. I am, after all, a sucker for my kids!

Asay Update

We have been busy with end of the school year business. We have even tried to "Spring clean." But given the winter-like conditions this year, I have found a great excuse not to get all of that cleaning done.

I did manage to get the blinds all cleaned upstairs. Now I just need to find a sunny, warm day to do the downstairs' blinds.

Ben had his first sleep over with his cousins Jordie and Jacie. And of course Jacob was there. It was wonderful for Marty and me. We had the house all to ourselves. Kellie (my sis who lives in the basement) was even away house sitting. It was sheer bliss!

I helped our with Jacob's field day at school today. He volunteered my services. I really just wanted to sleep in and get rested up for my next three nights at work. This things I do for my angel children.

Time is going far too quickly for this old gal. It's hard to believer that Easter has come and gone in the last few weeks. Really? One-third of this year is over. YIKES!

We went to Aunt Jane's annual Easter Egg Hunt. The boys had fun with their cousins and trying to find different color eggs. We had sloppy joes for lunch. And yummy homemade sugar cookies for treats.

As you can tell by the last picture, the boys ran their little legs and hearts out. They enjoyed much-needed naps on the ride home.

Finding The Joy

I am learning. I have never stopped learning. I am learning to find the joy in this human experience. I have definitely had my struggles these past several months. I have made the decision to make myself happy. And the things that bring me the most joy in this life is my family.

I am so blessed and grateful to have such a wonderful and supportive husband. I am also thrilled to have the two most beautifully rambunctious sons Jacob and Ben. Here are the two most readily photographed reasons I choose to find joy in this life and be happy!

Park City Fun

Thanks to Uncle Andy, we scored an awesome room/suite at the Hyatt Escala Lodge in Park City. We/Jenny had originally planned on going to St. George for the last weekend getaway before my every weekend work schedule began. However, Marty had a major client come out of the woodwork one week prior to the scheduled vacay. He busted his rump for this client, and wouldn't be able to leave for the vacation until Friday afternoon. I needed to be home Sunday evening for a CPR class Monday morning, not to mention Jacob needing to get back to school Monday.

Marty came up with the Park City idea at the 11th hour. I was quite impressed. Marty doesn't like spending money on hotels within the state of Utah. Why pay for a bed when we have several at home?

We had to convince Jacob that Park City would be as much fun. After a few minutes of discussion and persuasion, he was all game. Ben just likes going anywhere.

Our suite had 2 bedrooms, a family room, a full kitchen, a kitchenette, a w/d, 2 bathrooms, 2 fireplaces, and 3 flat screen TVs. There was a heated outdoor pool and 2 hot tubs. The ski lifts (which we did not use) were right outside the front door. The fire pit (which we did use) was right next to the ski lifts. Much food and fun was had by all. It's not hard entertaining a six and a three year old; they were just happy to swim and splash in the hot tub. Fine with me. Marty enjoyed catching up on his TLC shows "48 Hours." Two Steps Forward...One Step Back

Marty here. Ever feel this way? Today it's been a total merry-go-round. One of our oldest clients (20 years) told us last week that their company had been sold to a huge internationally recognized company. We were sad to hear this news, but also glad that we had been asked by the new owners to create a new multi-page brochure and revise all other sales literature and print everything in HUGE quantities. Two steps forward...

Then today another project we have been working on (another client altogether) was practically ripped out of our hands. Challenging as we have invested huge in this project to date, and it feels as though it's slipping away. One step back...

Just call me "Debbie Downer" today. Too much running and my emotional stores have been drained...

Hot Chocolate

Jacob loves to play outside while waiting for carpool. Ben loves to play/pester Jacob while waiting for carpool. Jacob has issued an open invite to anyone who wants to watch him do karate off the snow banks to come on over. Ben had a revelation today after I made him hot chocolate. He said "hot chocolate is warm." Nothing gets past this kid.

Chuck E. Cheese

We took the kids to the greatest place on earth (to a kid). We got to lunch in the armpit of Layton -- Chuck E. Cheese. It was worth the $40 mediocre pizza and tokens just to see the look of sheer delight on Jacob and Ben's faces. Oh to be a kid again! They redeemed their tokes for silly bands, fake teeth, race cars, and bendy straws. The last 2 pictures are what I made Saturday evening for dinner: homemade wheat and oatmeal bread. It was yummy.

Valentine's Day

Valentines wasn't anything super exciting; it was perfect. Just stayed home and spent time with the family. We enjoyed some beautiful weather; quite mild in fact. Jenny Turns The Big 2-9 (again)!

Yes. I am old, and I am getting gray hair on my right and left temples to prove it.

Marty took me out Saturday to see a wonderful movie, "The King's Speech." I loved that movie. I have not gone to many movies; in fact, I have only seen the Twilight movies in the past three years. Before that, I don't even think I had been to a movie in years. I refuse to pad the already thick wallets of the liberal Hollywood elite. I made an exception for Mr. Darcy, I mean Colin Firth. He and Geoffrey Rush did an amazing job. Actually, all the actors did. If you are a fan of the original BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries, you will enjoy seeing Mr. Collins and Miss Elizabeth Bennett in this movie. I loved this movie so much I would really consider paying full-price admission to see it again. (For the record, I must be honest. We used Cinemark gift cards and movie passes to get in and pay for the popcorn and Diet Cokes).

After the movie, we went to the Cheesecake Factory. It seems to be a tradition for my birthday. They have such yummy dinners, not to mention the delectable desserts. I still have leftovers to eat for lunch today.

On Sunday, we had family over for cake and ice cream. Actually, there was no ice cream. Just whipped cream. Same diff: lots of sugar and fat, but oh so yummy! I got money, gift cards, a much-needed apron, and a BYU sweatshirt. Marty knows me so well. My old sweatshirt was frayed and ripped; I had to throw it away last year. Thanks sweetie. And thank you Dave for braving the "great and spacious" building that you Utah fans refer to as the WILK!

I know this is a very belated entry, but better late than never, right?

I've started a new job, and hence the tardiness of updating the family blog. I am now a Labor and Delivery nurse at Intermountain Medical Center. I am quite excited about this. I meet each new day there with much joy and quite a bit of nerves. After 14 years in the NICU, I am out of my comfort zone. But I look at this new career path as a way to keep my old brain and neuron connections sharp.

My favorite part of the job: being able to be with these parents as they bring a new life into the world. The labor process is not always smooth sailing, but the end result never ceases to amaze me. It just proves my point beyond a shadow of a doubt -- there IS a God, a Heavenly Father who loves us and wants nothing but happiness for us.

Enough waxing philosophical for me. Here are some cute pictures of two of my biggest and brightest blessings in my life; they are the bright spot to the end of a busy night at work. There is nothing more rewarding than coming home to these darling angels who love me and are so excited to see me. Needless to say, the feeling is mutual.

We lit sparklers and threw Pop Its for New Years Eve. What better way for a six-year-old and a three-year-old to ring in the new year!

Santa found us. And he thought the kids were good enough to receive fun games and toys. I beg to differ, but then again, I am the mom.

We had a wonderful day with our little family. It was actually nice to not have to work during Christmas, and we didn't have to travel, and I didn't just have a baby. This is the first Christmas I haven't had one of the previous three conditions hovering around. I just loved staying home and laying low.

The kids had fun playing with their loot. Santa was smart this year; what he got for one, he got for the other. Or he made sure that both boys could play with a toy at the same time. Good on ya Santa. You get yummy cookies next year!

Jacob is my little Casenova. He has his eye on a cutie in his class. Her name is Riley. He calls her every afternoon. I know; he's only six. But love conquers all, I guess. Cute story: Jacob was talking on the phone with Riley the other week. I was just cleaning, minding my own business (insert "eavesdropping"). I heard Jacob say, "Riley! I L-O-V-E Y-O-U!" He even spelled out his heart-felt words. How cute is that? What makes it even cuter was watching him grin from ear-to-ear with his two front teeth missing. Oh the beauty of young love.

I feel bad for Ben most days while Jacob is at school. Ben adores his brother. In fact, his question of choice which is repeated often during the day is "when Jakey get home?" Moms are just not a fun substitute for big brothers. Lately, Ben has taken to playing with Courtney from across the cul-de-sac. She is an older woman; four months older than my little tike. They are like an old married couple: a little bit of fun mingled with a little bit of bickering. I think they are so cute when they are playing together.

Jacob has Show and Tell every Friday at school. He usually just takes a toy (Bakugan, Webkinz, DSi, etc.) He really wanted to take something exciting and different. I told him I had it covered. After many trials and tribulations of getting him fed, dressed, and teeth brushed, I dropped carpool off at school. I quickly ran home and good ol' Marty had Jacob's show and tell ready to take back up to the school. Marty had put Sarah in her crate so we could show off the furry friend. Dear Santa:

I have two adorable little boys. They are Jacob and Ben. I love them dearly most days. Other days not so much. They make me smile when they are sweet to each other and they don't know Mommy is watching. Other days, they are not so sweet and have battle wounds to prove their mischief.

Jacob is in the 1st Grade. He is a reading maniac and a math wizard. He loves to go to school most days; other days not so much. He is a good listener most days; others not so much. He will do his chores with a small amount of prodding/begging/pleading most days; other days not so much.

Benjamin just turned three years old. He is quite a gem EVERY day. Some days he sparkles like a diamond when he says the sweetest and cutest things. Other days he's a black onyx, getting into mischief, making a mess, and REFUSING to potty train. This last "little" thing is what drives poor Mommy crazy. He knows when He has to do his business. He even goes into the bathroom, closes/locks the door, does his thing (in his diaper), and then comes to tell me when he's done. I've resorted to shaming him into potty-training by only buys girlie diapers with cute purple hearts.

Santa, I know it sounds like I have lots of complaints about my boy. I admit that I do. But I gladly will take all the not-so-good with the good, because they are true blessings and miracles in my life. They are my gifts from a loving Father in Heaven. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm "Tree" Year Old

You read it correctly. Ben is "tree" years old now. He celebrated his birthday yesterday. I am so lucky to be his mother. He is such a delightful boy. I love how he will say out of the blue "Mom, I love you too!" He'll give me a hundred kiss; that's when he kisses me several times in a row. He thinks it's funny. I do too.

I love that he is such a good brother. He cannot wait until Jacob comes home from school every day. In fact, he will ask ALL THE TIME "when Jakey home?" At 3:30 pm, he waits at the front window to watch for Jacob's carpool to bring him home. Guess where Ben wants to go everyday for lunch? Jacob's school. He ADORES his big brother. I love you Ben. Thank you for letting me be your mother.

It's Autumn Time

The boys discovered the joy of raking leaves into a big pile and jumping into them. It was a fun way to get them to rake the leaves; it became a game to them. Now I see how to parent them. High Flying Adventures

Yesterday was Stephanie's 40th Birthday. Steph is Marty's first cousin. And guess what her parents did for her big day. They had everyone up to Ogden to the indoor sky-diving place. Sorry, I can't remember the name of it.

Marty took the boys. I was home nursing a sinus infection and bronchitis. Marty said they had a blast. Jacob was the first one to try after the tutorial class. And my boys (Marty included) were fearless. I was so proud. Here are some pictures. Sorry about the glare. Isn't Ben adorable in his little flight suit, helmet, and goggles? I love my boys. Trick or Treat!

Yesterday was the official day of Halloween. Yesterday was also Sunday. Since we live in Utah, we celebrated Halloween on Saturday. The boys had fun trick-or-treating. I did not. It was cold and rainy. I froze. But I would do it all over again just to see the delightful smiles of my children.

Jacob actually did get too cold when there were about four houses left. I know he was freezing, because he asked me if we could skip the rest of the houses and just go home. Poor baby. Ben did not complain; maybe he was in a frozen stupor and didn't know better.

But we did survive the elements and fun was had by all. The pictures below were actually taken with the boys yesterday. They were too impatient on Saturday. Candy was calling their names!

Fun With the Fam

As mentioned in the 2-3 prior posts, Aunt Jane had her annual Halloween Party last night. It was great fun. The food consisted of mucous bones (mac and cheese), Texas Chainsaw Massacre soup (chips and salsa), ghost poops (melt-away cookies), grasshopper goo (spinach dip with bread) and witches brew (homemade root beer). It was yummy fun.

Bobbing For . . . Doughnuts?

How funny. This is just a continuation of last night's Halloween Party at Aunt Jane's house.

One of the games was what I call "Bobbing for Doughnuts." Jane had six doughnuts, one for each kid. Each doughnut was suspended from it's own length of string suspended from a PVC pipe. Each child had to sit on the floor while trying to take bites of their doughnut. The catch? No hands. Sounds easy, but it was quite difficult and VERY funny. I was laughing so hard. The winner is the first one to get his doughnut to fall to the ground. Jacob and Ben loved the game. Well, Ben loved it after I held his doughnut still while he ate it sitting up.

You'll notice a picture of Jacob looking quite distressed, about to cry. That's my boy! He takes after me; he gets quite impatient when things aren't going his way.

Bobbing For Apples

As I mentioned a few posts ago, Jacob lost his first top tooth. He has another loose tooth. Therefore, it was quite fun watching him bob for apples at Jane's Halloween party. He was soooo cute. I just love that boy. It took him quite a few tries and a few gallons of water in his hair/on his clothes in order to get the esteemed apple.

Ben had to give it a go too. I helped him by holding the apple in my hand so he wouldn't freak out. If water goes into his nose, it messes with his ear tubes; then he just screams and cries. Plus 2-year-old kids are allowed to cheat.

Look at these scary superheroes that appeared at my house yesterday. We went to Jane's house for a spook-tacular time!

Jacob actually hated wearing his Darth costume. He pitched such a fit wanting to be Darth this year. I got the costume with all the bells and whistles. "It's too itchy. It's too long. It's too hot. I can't breathe." Never mind. Next year he can go as a whiny little six-year-old. Oops. He'll have to be a whiny seven-year-old since he'll be a year older. See if I spend money on a Halloween costume again!

Ben was just happy to go as the red Power Ranger. (And yes, he insisted on having a light saber too)! It's Jacob's hand-me-down from a few years ago. Ben actually wanted to be Batman about a month ago. I got him the deluxe costume. Then he saw the old Red Ranger, and that's all he wrote. Again, see if I spend money on another Halloween costume.

Side note: I think it is so funny how Ben calls Star Wars "Tar Whores!"

Toothless Cuteness

Jacob finally lost his first TOP tooth. I thought for sure I would miss his baby grin. I do, but I LOVE his new toothless grin. He looks so darling.

He was super excited to have a visit from the Tooth Fairy. In fact, he went to bed on his own at 8:00 -- a rare occurrence.

Jacob had Fall recess last Thursday and Friday, which means no school. He lost his tooth on Saturday. By Monday, he was more than excited to tell his class about losing his tooth. I guess they get to put their name on the "Tooth" board. I even made sure to do his hair (as much as a mom can "do" a son's hair) for the big day. Oh the things that make kids happy.

Pumpkin Patch

Today, we went to the annual Pumpkin Patch and Hayride at J&J hosted by my work. The boys had fun, as always. Our shoes got muddy, as always. We got awesome big pumpkins, as always. And Jacob and Ben had a blast with their cousins, as always!

And yes, that is Ben dressed as Bob the Builder. He just HAD to wear his tool belt and hard hat! Is he not the cutest boy? Love that kid!

Jacob and Ben's First Late Night

Jacob, aka Julie McCoy, hosted his first Late Night last week. He had three of his good friends over for pizza, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," and flashlight football.

The Magic of Paper Airplanes

What is it about paper airplanes that captivates children/boys for HOURS on end? We have gone through quite a few trees because our boys are fascinated by paper airplanes (don't tell Al Gore; oh wait, he doesn't know what he's talking about).

Marty has perfected the paper folding techniques thanks to the internet. Because of his genius, my boys are only a sheet of paper away from pure bliss at any moment. Thanks honey for making fun memories for our boys and me!

My mom bought some sugar cookie dough and Halloween cookie cut-outs for the boys prior to leaving for their mission. But alas, as fate would have it, we were unable to make the cookies due to the stomach flu that ravaged the little Asay boys.

We were finally able to make the cookies this past week. I think the boys (Marty included) ate more dough than finished product. We all had fun. Ben's favorite cut-out was "Batman," which was really just a bat cut-out. Jacob's favorite was a tie between the witch and the ghost.

The Hired Help

Marty loves to mow the grass. He is precise in the lines and angles he mows so as to contrast beautifully with the previous weeks' mowing. The finished look is an aesthetically pleasing checkerboard pattern. He takes great pride in it.

He is teaching our youngest, Ben, the finer points of lawn mowing. Ben faithfully follows Marty with his own Fisher-Price lawnmower. Ben even has to "fix" the wheels so it's the right height. I don't consider myself one to judge others. It's always "someone else" who judges people. Guess what: I'm wrong. After listening to President Monson at Women's Conference, I have a new goal: love others instead of judging them. "Others" means everyone.

Ben and I ate lunch with Jacob today. I didn't tell him beforehand that we were coming. He was so excited when he saw us. There wasn't room to sit at Jake's table, so Ben and I sat a few tables away. Jacob said he couldn't sit with us, because he wasn't allowed to stand up until the showed the letter B. I told him I spoke with the "Lunch Lady" and she said he could come sit with us. First Grade -- Part II

Jacob had a wonderful first day of 1st grade. There were just a few hiccups during the day, but all in all it was a success.

Jacob couldn't get the tupperware container with his sandwich open. He couldn't open his go-gurt. He brought home all the trash from lunchtime because he didn't know where to throw it away. He was too shy to ask for help. That was his reasoning at least; I don't think there's a shy bone in his body.

Anyway. I made his favorite dinner: spaghetti. We had a special FHE treat to celebrate his first day. It was a Mrs. Field's giant cookie that said "Happy Back To School." Needless to say it was a hit.

Welcome to First Grade

Today is Jacob's first day of First Grade! He is quite excited for school to start. He even let me pick out his outfit AND he put it on without any flack. This is coming from the kid who only wears Nike shorts and Mario/Star Wars/Bakugan shirts.

He gets to take his lunch (his choice); he didn't want to buy school lunch yet. Oh the joys of having a child in all-day school. I did get a little teary-eyed, but that was short lived. Now I get to spend some one-on-one time with Ben. I'm excited about that. But I will miss my tender-heart Jacob.

Ben had to put his CARS backpack on while we took Jacob to school. He even had to walk into the classroom, hang up his backpack, and sit at the desk next to his big brother. What a cute kid. He wasn't too thrilled when I said it was time to leave. A promise to check out a book about Trucks and Race Cars appeased him enough for us to escape without too much commotion.

Jacob's Birthday Party Utah

We celebrated Jacob's birthday last night with the Utah family members. It was a combined party with his cousin Jacie who turns 9-years-old today. The kids were cute all sitting in a row on the stools in front of the t.v.

Jacie got to open her presents first (ladies first, of course). Jacob was surprisingly patient with that. He was just as excited as she was while she opened her gifts.

Jacob finally got his turn at opening gifts. He got so many favorites: Legos, DSi games, Game Stop gift card, cash. He even declared "I'm the luckiest kid ever!" Yes you are.

We (Jacob) decided to forgo the traditional cake and ice cream and instead eat ice cream sandwiches made out of Costco chocolate chunk and oatmeal raisin cookies. Yummy choice Jacob. It was a lot easier to clean up than the cake too. And of course the kids loved it.

Jacob even got a new bike from mom and dad. He literally wore the heck out of his old bike. The seat no longer stays stationary; the chain contraption falls off constantly, and his back wheel, not just the tire, is broken. He was due for a new bike. I think his smile says it all.

I love you Jake. You are such a good boy with a very sweet and tender heart. Thank you for making our family complete.

Home and Friends

I love vacations. I love seeing my family. But you know what I love the most? Coming home (to a clean home thanks to my pre-vacation cleaning marathon). I love my home. I love peace and quiet. I love my bed. I love love love home.

Jacob's 6th Birthday

Jacob celebrated his 6th Birthday in Myrtle. He had a blast. So did all the other cousins. I bought cap guns and other noise makers for the kids. Oh the fun and tears. Not everyone liked the loud noise of the cap guns. But everyone LOVED the noise of the hit of the night: the whoopie cushion, courtesy of Grandma and Grandpa Larson. All the kids loved sitting on it until Grandpa sat on his a literally blew a hole in it. Ha Ha! Yummy Costco chocolate cake with cheesecake filling was also a big hit.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Our journey continued north to the fun city of North Myrtle Beach. My very generous Aunt Peggy offered us the use of her new beach house. It had seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, two kitchens, two family room, and a flat screen t.v. in every room except for the bathrooms.

The cousins had fun getting to know each other. Since my family is literally spread out from coast to coast, the cousins don't get to see each other but once every two years. It was fun now that they are getting old enough to remember each other and really play well together. Yes, it was noisy at times, but well worth the headache.

Sorry that some of the pictures are blurry. The camera was cold from being in the house and the humidity was 95%. Dang condensation.

Charleston, SC Fire Museum

If you're wondering why it's been quiet on the home front, it's because we've been on our family vacation. As most of you know, my parents are leaving for Singapore in one month to serve an 18-month mission. My family got together for one last reunion before the big event. We met in Myrtle Beach, SC. That's my mom's home and where we spent every summer I can remember.

Marty had never seen Charleston, SC before. So we decided to fly into that BEAUTIFUL city and spend a few days there before making our way up north to Myrtle. We lucked out thanks to Uncle Andy and got an amazing room at the Hyatt. It was super cheap to boot. Thanks Uncle Andy. We took the kids to the Charleston Fire Museum. The kids loved it. They had a fire engine simulator and a fire pole/slide combo. Those were the main attractions for the ninos.

We also saw the historic Battery and ate at the BEST seafood restaurant Hymans. After you get past the name, it really is quite wonderful. Side note: I don't know what it is about restaurant names in the south. We ate at another one north of Myrtle called "Sea Man's." Go figure.
